Citral

Citral is a naturally occurring compound found in citrus fruits and plants, characterised by its distinctive lemon scent. In skincare, it functions primarily as a fragrance ingredient, though it also appears in some formulations for its potential biological activity on skin cells.This monoterpene is commonly used in the cosmetic industry to impart pleasant aromas to products and to mask less desirable odours from other ingredients. Beyond fragrance, research suggests citral may interact with skin cell signalling pathways involved in renewal and protection.

Citral appears to stimulate skin renewal by binding to TRPV3, a receptor involved in keratinocyte (skin cell) proliferation. This interaction may promote the natural cycle of cell division and differentiation that maintains healthy skin structure.In terms of photoprotection, animal studies suggest citral may offer some defensive activity against UVB-induced cellular damage, though the mechanism in human skin requires further investigation.

Citral is typically incorporated into skincare formulations at low concentrations as a fragrance component. If using products containing citral, introduce them gradually to assess tolerance. Bear in mind that fragrance ingredients, whilst generally well-tolerated, can accumulate in products and may interact with other actives.

Citral is a known fragrance allergen and may trigger sensitivity or contact dermatitis in susceptible individuals. It may also exacerbate rosacea or heighten skin irritation, particularly in those with reactive or compromised skin barriers.
