What Is Citrus Junos Fruit Extract?
Citrus Junos Fruit Extract comes from yuzu, a citrus fruit native to East Asia that has been used in traditional skincare for centuries. The extract is rich in vitamin C, citric acid, and polyphenols — compounds with established antioxidant properties. In cosmetic formulations, it functions primarily as a skin conditioning agent.
The extract contains several bioactive compounds, including limonoids and other polyphenolic compounds, which may contribute to its effects on the skin when applied topically.
How It Works
The extract works through multiple mechanisms. Its polyphenolic compounds act as antioxidants by donating electrons to neutralise free radicals — unstable molecules that can damage skin cells. This antioxidant activity may help protect against environmental stressors and premature skin ageing.
Research has identified nomilin, a limonoid compound in yuzu seeds, as a potential inhibitor of tyrosinase — an enzyme involved in melanin production. By moderating tyrosinase activity, the extract may help regulate melanin synthesis, though human clinical evidence remains limited.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory studies show that yuzu seed extract demonstrates antioxidant activity and the ability to inhibit tyrosinase in cell cultures. Nomilin, one of its active compounds, appears to work through the PKA/CREB signalling pathway — a cellular communication route involved in melanin regulation.
However, most research to date has been conducted in vitro (in laboratory conditions) or in animal models. Human clinical studies specifically investigating Citrus Junos Fruit Extract are limited, so the extent of these benefits in real-world skincare use remains unclear. The ingredient is currently found in less than 1% of skincare products, suggesting it is not yet widely established in commercial formulations.
How to Use
Citrus Junos Fruit Extract is typically incorporated into serums, toners, essences, and moisturisers. As with any new skincare product, introduce it gradually into your routine and monitor your skin's response. The ingredient is generally well-tolerated, but those with citrus sensitivity or very reactive skin may wish to patch test first.
