Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil is a non-volatile, non-fragrant fixed oil pressed from the kernel — the white flesh — of the coconut palm fruit. It appears on ingredients lists as Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, sometimes alongside related entries such as Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract. Unusually among plant oils, more than 80% of its fat is saturated, which is why it sets to a soft white solid below roughly 25°C and melts to a clear liquid on contact with warm skin.
Its fatty acid profile is dominated by medium-chain fatty acids, principally lauric acid at around half the total, with myristic, palmitic, caprylic and capric acids making up most of the remainder and only small amounts of unsaturated oleic and linoleic acids. Two grades are common in cosmetics: virgin coconut oil, pressed from fresh coconut flesh and keeping its characteristic scent, and refined (RBD) coconut oil, processed to be effectively odourless and more consistent from batch to batch.
In formulation it is used as an emollient and occlusive — a comfort and texture ingredient in balms, body butters, cleansing balms, hand creams, hair masks and lip products. It can be used neat or included at anything from a fraction of a percent up to the majority of a formula. Used simply as a moisturiser, its performance is broadly comparable to mineral oil. It is not a sunscreen. Measurements of its UV-screening ability are low and inconsistent between studies, and it offers no meaningful protection against UVA, so it is never a substitute for a broad spectrum SPF.

How It Works
Coconut oil works largely through physics rather than biochemistry. Because it is highly saturated and semi-solid at room temperature, it spreads into a cohesive film that sits on and just within the outermost layer of skin, slowing the rate at which water evaporates from the surface. Reducing that water loss is what lets the skin's own moisture build back up, so skin feels softer and looks less tight and flaky after application.
Alongside that occlusive film sits the emollient half of the effect. Coconut oil is built from relatively short triglycerides compared with most plant oils, so it stays fluid and mobile once warmed and settles into the microscopic gaps between the flattened cells at the surface — the same gaps that make dry skin feel rough and look dull. A smoother surface reflects light more evenly, which is why skin can look brighter straight after use.
How it behaves depends on how much you use. A thin, well-warmed layer disappears into the surface and leaves a soft matte finish; a thick one stays put as a visible sheen, which is why coconut oil suits body skin and balms better than lightweight facial lotions. The same saturated structure that makes the film durable also makes it slow to sink in, so it holds its effect for hours rather than minutes.

How to Use
Coconut oil is anhydrous, so it has no pH of its own and slots into almost any routine.
- Warm it between your palms first. It melts at close to body temperature and spreads far further as a liquid than as a scoop of solid.
- Apply to damp skin. Straight out of the bath or shower it seals in surface water instead of sitting on an already dry surface.
- Favour the body. Elbows, shins, heels, cuticles and hands are ideal; be more cautious on the face if you are prone to congestion.
- Try it as a cleansing balm. Massage over dry skin to loosen make-up and SPF, then remove with a warm flannel and follow with a gentle cleanser.
- Hair and lips. Use as a pre-wash mask on mid-lengths and ends rather than the scalp, or as a simple lip conditioner.
- Apply it last. Its occlusive film can slow the absorption of anything layered over the top, so use it after water-based serums.
- Little and often. Daily or twice daily is fine; too much leaves a greasy film that transfers to clothes and bedding.
