What Is Coenzyme A?
Coenzyme A (CoA) is a naturally occurring cofactor found in all living cells. It plays a central role in cellular metabolism, particularly in the breakdown and synthesis of fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins. In skincare formulations, it is used as a skin conditioning agent.
The skin's barrier function depends heavily on lipid synthesis and metabolism. Coenzyme A facilitates the enzymatic reactions necessary for producing the fatty acids and other lipids that make up the stratum corneum, the skin's outermost protective layer.
How It Works
Coenzyme A acts as a cofactor for numerous enzyme-catalysed reactions within skin cells. It is particularly important in fatty acid metabolism—the process by which the skin synthesises and processes the lipids needed for barrier integrity. Without adequate CoA activity, the skin struggles to produce sufficient quantities of monounsaturated fatty acids, triglycerides, and other barrier lipids.
When the skin's lipid production is compromised, the barrier becomes weaker, water escapes more easily, and the skin becomes more susceptible to colonisation by opportunistic microorganisms. By supporting normal lipid metabolism, coenzyme A helps maintain the conditions the skin needs to stay hydrated and resilient.

Evidence supporting coenzyme A's role in skin health comes primarily from research into pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and its metabolite, dexpanthenol. Pantothenic acid is a precursor to coenzyme A, and topical dexpanthenol has been shown to improve stratum corneum hydration, reduce transepidermal water loss, and support skin softness and elasticity. Some research also suggests it may activate fibroblast proliferation, which is relevant to wound healing.
Direct clinical evidence specifically for topical coenzyme A itself is limited. Most of what we know about its skin benefits derives from understanding its essential metabolic role and extrapolating from pantothenic acid research. Further targeted studies would help clarify its efficacy when applied directly to skin in cosmetic formulations.
How to Use
Coenzyme A is typically incorporated into moisturisers, serums, and barrier-repair products. As with most skin conditioning ingredients, consistent use is more important than occasional application. It works well alongside other barrier-supporting ingredients such as fatty acids, ceramides, and humectants. There is no need for special application techniques; use it as directed in your formulation's instructions.
