Concentrated, non-fragrant oil from the coffee bean plant Can help restore skin and contribute to a healthier, smoother look and feel

What Is Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Oil?

The concentrated oil from the coffee bean plant, which is green, not dark brown as this color doesn’t occur until coffee beans are roasted. Research on this oil’s effect on skin is intriguing. In vitro tests on skin samples and sections of human skin have shown topical application can help restore skin and contribute to a healthier, smoother look and feel. This non-fragrant plant oil also appears to stimulate pathways in skin that lead to greater moisture retention.

Although that news is encouraging, at this point there’s little research to go on. However, coffee seed extract and oil are a rich source of antioxidants whether consumed (as in beverages) or applied to skin. We’re hopeful that ongoing research will reveal all forms of coffee to have benefits for skin.

How It Works

Coffea arabica seed oil appears to work through multiple pathways. The fatty acids and plant-derived compounds can absorb into the skin, where they may interact with fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing structural proteins like collagen and elastin. Early studies suggest the oil may stimulate these cells to increase their output of key growth factors.

Additionally, the oil's polyphenolic content may offer antioxidant activity, potentially helping to neutralise free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental pollution. The occlusive properties of the oil itself help lock in existing moisture.

How to Use

As a plant oil, coffea arabica seed oil works best when applied to damp skin to seal in hydration. If used as a standalone product, a few drops go a long way; it can also be mixed into a lighter moisturiser to reduce occlusion. Those new to plant oils should patch test first, particularly if acne-prone, as oils can occasionally trigger congestion in sensitive individuals.

Safety & Precautions

Generally well-tolerated by most skin types. As with all plant oils, there is theoretical risk of comedogenicity in acne-prone skin; individual tolerance varies.
