What Is Cutibacterium Acnes Bacteriophages?
Cutibacterium acnes bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and lyse (break down) Cutibacterium acnes bacteria. Unlike broad-spectrum antibiotics, these phages are highly selective, attacking only their bacterial host whilst leaving other microorganisms in the skin ecosystem intact.
The ingredient functions as an antimicrobial agent designed to reduce acne-causing bacterial populations. Bacteriophages occur naturally in the environment and on human skin, making them a biological rather than synthetic approach to bacterial control.
How It Works
Bacteriophages are obligate parasites of bacteria; they attach to and penetrate their bacterial host, then replicate inside the cell until the cell ruptures, releasing new phages. This lytic cycle kills the target bacterium without requiring chemical action against surrounding skin tissue.
Because these phages are highly specific to Cutibacterium acnes, they leave other microorganisms—including beneficial bacteria that support skin barrier function and microbiome stability—largely untouched. This targeted approach differs fundamentally from broad-spectrum antimicrobials.
