Cycloastragenol is a triterpene derived from astragaloside IV, a compound found in the astragalus plant. It has been studied for its potential biological activity in supporting skin health, particularly in relation to protecting cells from environmental stress.
In skincare formulations, cycloastragenol is typically delivered through advanced encapsulation systems—such as liposomes or phospholipid vesicles—designed to improve its ability to penetrate and remain in the skin layers where it may be most effective.
How It Works
Cycloastragenol appears to work through multiple pathways. When UV radiation or oxidative stress affects skin cells, it can trigger the production of harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS) and activate enzymes—matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)—that break down structural proteins like collagen. Research suggests cycloastragenol may suppress these harmful processes and reduce ROS generation.
Because cycloastragenol is a larger, relatively insoluble molecule, its effectiveness in topical products depends heavily on the delivery system used. Encapsulation in liposomes or ethosomes aims to ferry the ingredient across the skin barrier so it can reach the cells where it may offer protection.

Most studies have been conducted in cell cultures rather than in vivo (on living skin), and human clinical data on visible skin improvements are sparse. The delivery challenge—getting the ingredient effectively into skin through topical application—remains an area requiring further investigation. Claims about skin appearance improvements exist primarily in product descriptions rather than robust clinical trial data.

Since its effectiveness depends on delivery formulation, apply it to clean skin before heavier moisturisers to allow the product to absorb.
