What Is Diethylhexyl 2,6-Naphthalate?
Diethylhexyl 2,6-naphthalate (DEHN) is a synthetic compound belonging to the naphthalate family of organic chemicals. It functions as a multitasking ingredient in cosmetic formulations, serving primarily as a photostabiliser—a substance that helps protect other UV-absorbing ingredients from breaking down when exposed to sunlight.
Beyond its photostabilising role, DEHN also acts as an emollient and skin conditioning agent, contributing to the texture and feel of a formula. It is found in a small proportion of skincare products, typically those designed around sun protection.
How It Works
DEHN stabilises certain UV-absorbing ingredients—particularly avobenzone (butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane), one of the most commonly used UVA filters—by reducing their photochemical breakdown. When UV filters are exposed to sunlight, they can degrade and lose their protective capacity. DEHN acts as a buffer in this process, helping the filters remain effective for longer.
As an emollient, DEHN integrates into the oil phase of formulations, softening the skin and improving the sensory experience of application.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests that DEHN is an efficient photostabiliser, particularly when used alongside avobenzone in sunscreen formulations. Studies in hairless mice showed that formulations containing DEHN as a photostabiliser, combined with UV filters and vitamin A palmitate, provided measurable photoprotection benefits, including reduced erythema (redness) and improved skin barrier function after UV exposure.
However, evidence specific to DEHN's emollient or conditioning benefits in isolation is limited. Most research contextualises it within complete sunscreen systems rather than examining it as a standalone skincare ingredient.
How to Use
DEHN is typically used as part of finished sunscreen or daily protection products rather than as a standalone treatment. If using a sunscreen containing this ingredient, apply generously and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. It is not designed to be used in isolation from UV filters.
