What Is Dimethicone Pg-Diethylmonium Chloride?
Dimethicone PG-diethylmonium chloride is a silicone-derived polymer that combines dimethicone (a silicone oil) with a positively charged quaternary ammonium compound. This hybrid structure allows it to bond to hair and skin surfaces, creating a protective film that smooths and conditions.
Whilst primarily used in haircare formulations, this ingredient occasionally appears in skincare products designed to improve texture and provide a conditioning effect on the skin's surface. It is soluble or dispersible in water, making it easier to formulate than some silicones.
How It Works
The ingredient works through electrostatic attraction. The positively charged portion of the molecule is drawn to the negatively charged outer layers of skin and hair, anchoring the silicone component to the surface. This creates a thin, breathable occlusive layer.
Unlike occlusive oils, dimethicone and its derivatives sit on top of the skin rather than penetrating deeply, providing conditioning and smoothing without a heavy or greasy feel. The protective film reduces water loss whilst allowing the skin to maintain normal gas exchange.
Clinical Evidence & References
Evidence specific to this ingredient in skincare is limited. Most research focuses on dimethicone and similar silicones in general, which have been shown to improve skin smoothness, reduce TEWL, and support barrier function without causing irritation in most people.
The quaternary ammonium modification is primarily used in haircare for conditioning; its additional benefit in skincare formulations remains understudied. It is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, though large-scale clinical trials in skincare are scarce.
How to Use
This ingredient is typically used as a formulation component rather than a standalone treatment. It is found in moisturisers, serums, and primer-style products. Apply to cleansed skin as directed by the product instructions. Because it forms a surface layer, it works well in layered routines—apply lighter textures first, then use products containing this ingredient to seal and smooth. No special precautions are needed for frequency; follow the product's guidance.
