Disodium lauroamphodiacetate is a synthetic surfactant derived from lauric acid, a fatty acid found in coconut and palm oils. It belongs to the amphoteric surfactant family, meaning it carries both positive and negative charges, allowing it to work effectively across a range of pH levels.In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a cleanser and foam booster. Its mild nature makes it suitable for products designed to remove excess oil and impurities without stripping the skin barrier, and it is also used to improve the texture and stability of formulations.

As an amphoteric surfactant, disodium lauroamphodiacetate works by positioning itself at the boundary between oil and water. One end of the molecule is attracted to oily substances (such as sebum and makeup), whilst the other is attracted to water. This allows it to lift and suspend oil on the skin so it can be rinsed away.Its amphiphilic structure also helps stabilise emulsions and foams within the formulation itself, improving both efficacy and the sensory experience of the product.

This ingredient is typically encountered in rinse-off cleansers rather than leave-on products.
