DM Hydantoin is a synthetic organic compound belonging to the hydantoin family. It functions primarily as a humectant—a substance that draws moisture into the skin—and is also valued in cosmetic formulations for its ability to enhance preservation systems and control product viscosity (thickness).Whilst DM Hydantoin is more commonly found in hair care and body care products, it can appear in some skincare formulations where moisture retention and formula stability are priorities. It is derived through chemical synthesis rather than natural sources.

As a humectant, DM Hydantoin works by forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules, drawing them from deeper skin layers and the surrounding environment towards the stratum corneum (outer skin layer). This helps maintain skin hydration and a smoother skin surface.The ingredient also provides preservation support by creating an environment less favourable to microbial growth, allowing formulators to use lower levels of traditional preservatives or improve overall formula stability.

DM Hydantoin is typically incorporated into finished formulations by manufacturers rather than used as a standalone ingredient by consumers. When present in skincare products, it works best as part of a complete hydrating system—use it alongside other hydration-supporting ingredients like glycerol or humectants for optimal moisture benefit.
