Ethyl Lactate

Ethyl lactate is an ester derived from lactic acid and ethanol. It functions primarily as a solvent in skincare formulations, helping to dissolve and distribute other ingredients evenly. It also contributes fragrance or scent notes to products.In acne-focused formulations, ethyl lactate has been studied for its potential to lower skin pH and inhibit bacterial growth when applied topically. When the skin breaks it down, it converts to ethanol and lactic acid, creating conditions that may be less favourable for acne-causing bacteria.

When applied to skin, ethyl lactate is broken down into ethanol and lactic acid. This process lowers the pH of the skin surface, which inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria, particularly Propionibacterium acnes. Lower pH also reduces the bacterial enzyme lipase, which would otherwise break sebum down into free fatty acids that trigger inflammation.Research in controlled settings shows ethyl lactate concentrates in hair follicles and sebaceous glands, where acne typically develops, allowing it to work directly in these areas.

Ethyl lactate is typically a minor component in acne-focused formulations rather than a primary active. Use as directed by the product instructions. If the product contains ethyl lactate alongside other acne actives like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, introduce gradually to assess tolerance, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

Ethyl lactate is generally well-tolerated at the concentrations used in skincare. It may cause mild eye or skin irritation in some individuals; avoid direct eye contact and rinse thoroughly if this occurs.
