Evodia rutaecarpa fruit extract comes from the small berry fruit of the Evodia rutaecarpa plant, used in traditional Chinese medicine (where it's known as Wu-Zhu-Yu). The extract contains alkaloid compounds including rutaecarpine, dehydroevodiamine, and evodin, which are believed to be responsible for its biological activity.
In skincare formulations, this ingredient functions as a skin conditioner, with research suggesting it may help reduce inflammatory responses in the skin. It remains relatively uncommon in commercial skincare products, appearing in approximately 0.1% of formulations.
How It Works
The active alkaloids in Evodia fruit extract are thought to work by modulating inflammatory pathways in skin cells. Research indicates the extract may inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators (such as prostaglandins) that trigger redness and sensitisation, particularly when skin is exposed to irritants or UV damage.
The mechanism appears to involve activation of vanilloid receptors, a cellular pathway also engaged by capsaicin. However, unlike capsaicin, Evodia extract does not produce a warming or peppery sensation on application.
Clinical Evidence & References
Early research suggests Evodia rutaecarpa extract has anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties. In laboratory studies, a defined mixture of the extract's active components inhibited inflammatory responses in cultured skin cells and reduced erythema (redness) in human skin exposed to inflammatory triggers.
However, human clinical trials are limited, and most available evidence comes from cell and animal studies or small-scale human models. More robust clinical data would help establish optimal concentrations and real-world efficacy in skincare products.
How to Use
This ingredient is typically found in lightweight serums, essences, and targeted treatments rather than heavy creams. Apply to clean skin before heavier products. As with any new ingredient, introduce it gradually if you have sensitive skin, and monitor your skin's response over several weeks to assess benefit.
