What Is Freesia Refracta Extract?
Freesia refracta extract comes from the freesia flower, a perennial plant in the Iris family native to South Africa. In skincare, it is typically used as a skin conditioning agent derived from plant callus (laboratory-cultured plant cells), which can be formulated to concentrate active compounds.
The extract contains compounds including nicotinamide and pyroglutamic acid, which appear to support skin health through multiple pathways. It is found in approximately 0.1% of skincare products, suggesting it remains relatively niche in formulation.
How It Works
Freesia refracta extract appears to work primarily by stimulating fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen—to increase collagen I production. This process supports the structural integrity and firmness of the skin matrix.
The extract also enhances the interaction between fibroblasts and collagen fibres, which may improve how well skin cells communicate with and maintain the collagen network. Additionally, bioactive compounds in the extract provide antioxidant activity, helping to counteract oxidative stress that can contribute to skin ageing.
Clinical Evidence & References
Limited but promising research supports the use of freesia refracta callus extract for skin ageing concerns. One study of 43 female volunteers demonstrated an 11.1% reduction in skin roughness and suggested improvements in skin firmness when the extract was used topically.
Laboratory studies show the extract can increase collagen I production by approximately 52% in both normal and aged fibroblasts, and enhance fibroblast-collagen interaction by around 37%. However, evidence remains relatively sparse, and further research with larger sample sizes would strengthen our understanding of its efficacy and optimal use in skincare formulations.
How to Use
Freesia refracta extract is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and multi-ingredient anti-ageing products. Since it works best as part of a consistent skincare routine, use products containing this ingredient daily for at least 4–6 weeks to assess results. It generally pairs well with other skin-conditioning and collagen-supporting ingredients such as peptides, niacinamide, or hyaluronic acid.
