What Is Fucose?
Fucose is a naturally occurring simple sugar (monosaccharide) found in brown seaweed, certain plant polysaccharides, and some animal tissues. In skincare formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent.
The ingredient is studied primarily for its potential role in supporting glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production — compounds that help skin retain moisture and maintain structural integrity within the dermis.
How It Works
Fucose appears to work by stimulating fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen and other structural proteins — to increase their synthesis of glycosaminoglycans. These compounds act as natural moisturising factors, binding water within the skin and supporting the scaffold that keeps skin plump and resilient.
The mechanism is thought to operate at a cellular level, influencing the production of specific GAGs like heparan sulphate and keratan sulphate rather than acting as a direct humectant.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro research using human skin fibroblast cultures has shown that L-fucose and fucose-rich polysaccharides can stimulate glycosaminoglycan incorporation at concentrations of 1–10 micrograms per millilitre. One study reported a 20% increase in heparan sulphate production and a 45% increase in keratan sulphate production depending on the fucose source and fibroblast age.
However, most evidence comes from laboratory studies rather than large human clinical trials. More research in living skin would help establish the practical efficacy of fucose in cosmetic formulations and determine optimal concentrations for consumer products.
How to Use
Fucose is typically included as part of broader skincare formulations rather than as a standalone active. Look for it in serums, moisturisers, and hydrating products. It works well alongside other skin conditioning and hydrating ingredients and can be used daily as part of your routine. No special preparation or layering rules apply.
