What Is Fullerenes?

Fullerenes are spherical molecules composed entirely of carbon atoms, discovered in the 1980s. In skincare, they function as antioxidants—compounds that help neutralise harmful free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that accumulate in skin from environmental stress and ageing processes.

These molecules work at a molecular level to reduce oxidative damage, which underpins many skin concerns including premature ageing, inflammation, and impaired healing. Fullerenes are relatively rare in commercial skincare, appearing in approximately 0.1% of formulated products.

How It Works

Fullerenes combat oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) before they can damage skin cells. This reduces inflammation, supports normal cell function, and may help prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin that occurs with age and environmental exposure.

In wound healing contexts, research suggests fullerenes may promote fibroblast activity—the cells responsible for producing collagen and supporting tissue repair—whilst also reducing excessive cell death triggered by oxidative damage.

Clinical Evidence & References

Published research indicates fullerenes possess potent antioxidant and free-radical-scavenging properties relevant to skin health. Studies in controlled settings have shown they can reduce excessive reactive oxygen species production and support cellular resilience, particularly in inflammatory or compromised skin states.

However, evidence in commercial skincare formulations remains limited. Most published studies investigate fullerenes in specialised delivery systems or at concentrations not typical of mainstream cosmetics. Further research is needed to establish their efficacy and optimal use in finished skincare products at practical concentrations.

How to Use

Fullerenes are typically found in serums or specialist treatments rather than everyday moisturisers. Use as directed on product labelling. Since this is an antioxidant ingredient, it integrates well into broader skincare routines focused on environmental protection and skin resilience. Allow time to assess tolerance before layering with other active ingredients.

Safety & Precautions

Fullerenes are generally well-tolerated in skincare formulations. As with any new ingredient, introduce gradually and discontinue if sensitivity develops. Long-term safety data in cosmetic use remains limited.
