It is found in a small proportion of skincare products and is typically listed under its INCI name, glyoxal. As a fragrance component, it may also contribute subtle aromatic notes to formulations.

How It Works

Glyoxal acts as a preservative by disrupting microbial cell function and preventing colonisation. Its antimicrobial mechanism centres on its chemical reactivity with cellular proteins and other biomolecules, which compromises the structural integrity and function of microorganisms.

When present in skincare formulations, it works alongside other preservative systems to maintain product integrity throughout its shelf life.

Research into glyoxal's effects on skin is limited and somewhat conflicting. However, these findings relate primarily to external exposure to glyoxal vapour or high concentrations in controlled settings, rather than its use as a preservative in cosmetic formulations. The concentrations used in skincare products are considerably lower. More research is needed to establish the safety profile of glyoxal at cosmetic-use levels and its direct effects on skin health in topical application.
