What Is Hydrogen Peroxide?
Hydrogen peroxide is a simple molecule composed of hydrogen and oxygen (H₂O₂). In skincare, it functions as an antimicrobial and oxidising agent, meaning it works by releasing oxygen to break down bacteria and other microorganisms on the skin surface and in hair follicles.
In cosmetic formulations, hydrogen peroxide is used at low concentrations (typically 2–3%) to help reduce bacterial colonisation, particularly the bacteria associated with acne and follicle-related concerns. It is found in a small proportion of skincare products, often in cleansers or targeted treatments rather than leave-on serums or moisturisers.
How It Works
Hydrogen peroxide works by decomposing into water and oxygen when applied to skin. The oxygen released creates an unfavourable environment for anaerobic bacteria (those that thrive without oxygen), including species that colonise oil glands and contribute to acne formation.
The oxidising effect is relatively rapid but temporary. Because the molecule breaks down quickly, the antimicrobial benefit is short-lived unless the product is left on the skin or used regularly. At typical skincare concentrations, it does not penetrate deeply into the dermis, so its effects are primarily limited to the surface and upper follicle areas.

Most robust evidence for hydrogen peroxide relates to its use in clinical settings for surgical skin preparation, where it has shown modest efficacy in reducing Cutibacterium colonisation when used alongside other antiseptics like chlorhexidine. These studies suggest an additive benefit, though evidence remains limited by small sample sizes and variable study design.
For routine skincare use in acne-prone individuals, clinical data are more limited. While the antimicrobial mechanism is sound, long-term efficacy studies comparing hydrogen peroxide to other acne-fighting ingredients (such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) are scarce. Its practical benefit in skincare formulations may be modest, and it is not considered a first-line treatment for acne.

If using a hydrogen peroxide-based cleanser or treatment, apply to clean skin and rinse thoroughly after the recommended contact time (usually 1–2 minutes). Hydrogen peroxide is best used as a cleansing step rather than left on the skin long-term, as its antimicrobial effect is brief and consistent exposure may cause irritation. Avoid combining with other potentially irritating ingredients such as strong acids or vitamin C in the same routine without spacing applications.
