Galactosyl Salicylate

Galactosyl salicylate is a compound derived from salicylic acid, modified with a galactose sugar moiety. This chemical modification is designed to alter how the ingredient behaves on skin compared to salicylic acid alone, potentially offering a gentler profile whilst maintaining some of salicylic acid's recognised properties.In formulations, it functions as an antiseborrhoeic agent—meaning it may help reduce excess sebum production—and as a skin conditioner. The galactose component may contribute to skin hydration and barrier support, distinguishing it from unmodified salicylic acid.

Salicylates work by penetrating the skin's outer layers and helping to dissolve excess sebum and debris. The addition of galactose to this salicylate structure is thought to improve tolerability and add hydrating properties, potentially reducing the drying or irritating effects sometimes associated with unmodified salicylic acid.By addressing both sebum excess and skin conditioning in one molecule, galactosyl salicylate may provide a more balanced approach to managing oily or combination skin without over-drying.

Galactosyl salicylate is typically used in cleansers, toners, or serums targeting oily skin. Because it is derived from salicylic acid, patch test first if you have sensitive skin or are new to salicylate-based products. Use as directed on the product label; it can generally be incorporated into both morning and evening routines.

Generally well-tolerated at cosmetic concentrations. As with all salicylates, avoid contact with eyes and discontinue if irritation develops.
