What Is Ginsenosides?
Ginsenosides are bioactive compounds derived from Panax ginseng, a traditional medicinal plant. They belong to a class of molecules called triterpenoids and exist in several forms (Rb1, Rg3, Rd and compound K among others), each with slightly different properties. When applied topically or ingested, ginsenosides work as skin-conditioning agents.
These compounds have attracted interest in skincare for their potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The research suggests they may support various aspects of skin health, though most clinical evidence in humans remains limited and further study is needed to establish optimal concentrations and efficacy in cosmetic formulations.
How It Works
Ginsenosides function primarily as antioxidants, neutralising free radicals that can damage skin cells and contribute to visible ageing. They appear to support the skin's natural defences and may promote the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, both essential for skin firmness and hydration.
Research also suggests they may help regulate inflammatory processes within the skin, which is relevant for conditions characterised by redness or sensitivity. However, the precise mechanisms of action in human skin remain incompletely understood, and most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than large-scale clinical trials.

Start with products containing ginsenosides as part of a regular routine and allow several weeks to assess any changes. There is no established evidence that higher concentrations are more effective, and formulation quality—including stabilisation and pH—influences bioavailability.
