What Is Glucosylrutin?
Glucosylrutin (also known as alpha-glucosylrutin) is a naturally derived flavonoid—a type of plant compound with antioxidant properties. It is created by attaching a glucose molecule to rutin, a flavonoid found in plants, which improves its ability to penetrate the skin's outer layers.
In skincare, glucosylrutin functions primarily as an antioxidant, meaning it helps neutralise free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can damage skin cells. These unstable molecules are generated by UV exposure, pollution, and natural metabolic processes, and can degrade collagen, alter DNA, and trigger inflammation.

Glucosylrutin protects skin by donating electrons to free radicals, stabilising them and preventing them from triggering harmful chain reactions in cell membranes and DNA. The glucose attachment makes it more bioavailable in the epidermis, allowing it to reach vulnerable skin cells more effectively than non-modified flavonoids.
Research suggests it also influences the balance between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)—enzymes that break down collagen—and their inhibitors (TIMPs), helping to preserve skin structure after UV exposure. However, most evidence to date comes from laboratory and cell-based studies rather than large-scale human trials.

Laboratory research demonstrates that glucosylrutin is a potent antioxidant with good skin penetration. Studies using cultured human skin cells have shown it can reduce UV-induced changes to collagen-degrading enzymes and modulate inflammatory responses. That said, human clinical data is limited. Glucosylrutin remains relatively uncommon in commercial products (appearing in roughly 0.1% of skincare formulations), and robust efficacy studies in living human subjects are sparse. More research is needed to establish optimal concentrations, duration of use, and measurable skin benefits in real-world conditions.
