Gossypium herbaceum flower extract is derived from the flowers of the herbaceous cotton plant. In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a humectant and skin conditioning agent—meaning it helps attract and retain water within the skin's outer layers.This ingredient is used in relatively modest concentrations within skincare products, where its role is to support hydration and maintain skin moisture balance. It is not a treatment ingredient but rather a supporting component that enhances the texture and feel of a formulation.

As a humectant, Gossypium herbaceum flower extract works by attracting water molecules from deeper skin layers and the environment, drawing them into the epidermis. This increases skin hydration and can temporarily improve the appearance of fine lines and skin elasticity.The conditioning action comes from the plant compounds within the extract, which coat the skin surface and help reduce water evaporation. This dual mechanism—hygroscopic water-binding plus light occlusion—makes it a useful supporting ingredient in hydrating formulations.

This ingredient is best used as part of a complete hydrating routine. Apply serums or moisturisers containing it to damp skin to maximise its humectant effect—the existing moisture gives it more to draw from.
