Hexanediol

Hexanediol is a small-chain alcohol used primarily as a solvent in skincare formulations. It belongs to a group of ingredients called humectants and preservative boosters, helping to dissolve other actives and improve product stability.In cosmetics, hexanediol typically appears in very low concentrations (often below 1%). Its main role is functional rather than directly beneficial to skin—it enables formulations to work effectively by keeping ingredients dissolved and preventing separation.

Hexanediol works as a solvent by dissolving other ingredients that might not mix well with water or oils alone. This keeps a formulation homogeneous and prevents ingredients from separating or crystallising.Additionally, hexanediol has mild humectant properties, meaning it can draw small amounts of moisture into the skin. At the low concentrations used in skincare, this effect is modest and largely contributes to overall product hydration rather than a standalone benefit.

Hexanediol is a background ingredient—you need not use it in any particular way. It functions best as part of a well-formulated product. There is no benefit to using higher concentrations, and products are formulated with the appropriate amount for stability and efficacy.

Hexanediol is generally well-tolerated. Rare contact sensitisation has been reported in specific contexts (such as medical devices with high concentrations of related acrylate compounds), but this is not a typical concern in standard skincare products at cosmetic concentrations.
