Hibiscus sabdariffa fruit extract comes from a plant commonly called roselle. For centuries it has been used to make teas and as a food additive, as well as being used to treat a variety of internal illnesses.
While there is research demonstrating the antioxidant capacity of the flowers of this plant, specifically its calyxes (a membrane of sorts covering a flower when it’s in its bud stage), there is not a wealth of information when it comes to its fruit, including what benefits, if any, it has for skin.
Manufacturers of a skin care ingredient called Hydrosella, which is a combination of glycerin, water, erythritol, and Hibiscus sabdariffa fruit extract, claim it promotes skin health through hydration and preventing water loss. But keep in mind glycerin can do that on its own, so attributing this to the fruit is meaningless unless comparative research is done.
