Hibiscus sabdariffa flower extract is a plant extract that comes from the flower of the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant, also known as roselle. This extract contains a mix of beneficial compounds, including antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, which are responsible for the plant’s deep red color. Research indicates that it has a soothing effect on skin.
The extract is also a source of natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which can provide gentle exfoliation. However, the concentration of AHAs in the extract is not high enough to be considered a true exfoliant, so it is best to think of it as a supporting ingredient that offers antioxidant and soothing benefits.
