Mesenchymal stem cell conditioned media works through paracrine signalling—a process where secreted molecules from one cell type influence the behaviour of other cells nearby. The media contains growth factors and cytokines that bind to receptors on skin cells (particularly fibroblasts in the dermis), triggering cellular responses that support structural integrity and resilience.
Rather than replacing damaged cells, these bioactive compounds essentially encourage existing skin cells to function more optimally. For example, research shows they may upregulate the production of key extracellular matrix components like elastin and hyaluronic acid, and may help regulate inflammatory responses that contribute to skin irritation or sensitivity.

Laboratory studies have demonstrated that umbilical cord-derived and placental-derived stem cell media can stimulate fibroblasts to increase production of elastin (up to 56% in one study) and hyaluronic acid (up to 83% in one study). These are key components of healthy, resilient skin structure.
Animal and cell culture studies also suggest that mesenchymal stem cell media may help reduce inflammatory responses relevant to atopic dermatitis and other inflammatory skin conditions. However, human clinical trials in cosmetic skincare remain limited, so the degree to which these laboratory effects translate to visible skin improvements in topical products is not yet fully established. More rigorous human studies would help clarify efficacy and optimal formulation approaches.
