What Is Hydrolyzed Roe?
Hydrolyzed roe is a protein derived from fish eggs that has been broken down into smaller molecular components. In skincare formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent with gentle exfoliating properties.
Unlike chemical exfoliants that work through acid penetration, hydrolyzed roe proteins work enzymatically to help loosen adhesions between dead skin cells on the surface layer. This allows for gradual exfoliation and refinement of skin texture without the same degree of irritation associated with stronger chemical treatments.
How It Works
Hydrolyzed roe proteins work differently to chemical exfoliants. Rather than dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells through pH changes, these proteins enzymatically break down the adhesions that hold dead cells to the skin surface. This enzymatic mechanism is gentler and more gradual than acid-based exfoliation.
When applied topically, the proteins interact with the outermost skin layers to encourage natural shedding of dead cells, which can lead to improved texture and a more refined appearance over time.
Clinical Evidence & References
Limited clinical evidence suggests hydrolyzed roe may be effective for gentle exfoliation and texture improvement. One study comparing hydrolyzed salmon roe proteins to glycolic acid found the roe formulation achieved exfoliation with potentially lower irritation levels, though the research was small and focused on photoaged skin.
Evidence for post-procedure use is also preliminary. A split-face study suggested a hydrolyzed roe cream applied after chemical peels may help reduce facial redness and swelling compared to untreated skin, though larger studies would help confirm these findings. More research is needed to establish optimal concentrations and long-term efficacy across different skin types and concerns.

How to Use
Hydrolyzed roe is typically used as part of a cream or serum formulation applied once or twice daily. Start with once-daily application to assess tolerance, particularly if your skin is sensitive or you are new to exfoliating treatments. It can be layered with other skincare products but should not be combined with strong chemical exfoliants on the same day, as this may increase irritation risk.
