Isobutane is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas (CAS# 75-28-5) commonly used as a propellant in aerosol skincare formulations. It serves a purely functional role, helping to dispense product from pressurised containers in a fine mist or foam.
As a propellant, isobutane doesn't remain on the skin in meaningful amounts after application. Its sole purpose is to facilitate product delivery, making it invisible to skincare efficacy once the product has been sprayed.
How It Works
Isobutane works by creating pressure within a sealed container, which forces the skincare formula out when the valve is opened. This allows products to be dispensed as a fine spray or foam without requiring a pump mechanism or manual application.
Once sprayed, isobutane evaporates rapidly from the skin surface and does not interact with skin cells or tissue.
Clinical Evidence & References
Isobutane is a well-established propellant in cosmetic formulations and is recognised as safe for use in aerosol products by regulatory bodies including the FDA and UK legislation. Its primary role is functional rather than therapeutic, so clinical efficacy data focuses on its performance as a delivery system rather than skin benefits.
Long-term safety data on propellant-based skincare is reassuring, though individual tolerance may vary depending on the specific product formulation and frequency of use.
How to Use
Shake aerosol containers before use to ensure the propellant and active ingredients are properly mixed. Apply from an appropriate distance (typically 15–30 cm from skin) to achieve even coverage. Isobutane-based products are suitable for all skin types, though those with sensitivity to aerosol sprays may prefer alternative delivery formats.
