What Is Lactobacillus Extracellular Vesicles?

Lactobacillus extracellular vesicles (LEVs) are tiny membrane-bound structures released by probiotic Lactobacillus bacteria. These vesicles function as natural delivery systems, transporting bioactive molecules between cells. Rather than containing living bacteria, they carry signalling compounds that can influence skin cell behaviour and immune responses.

In skincare formulations, LEVs are designed to work with your skin's natural defences. They bridge communication between bacteria and human cells—a process known as interkingdom communication—without introducing viable microorganisms to the skin surface.

How It Works

LEVs operate by communicating with your skin cells and immune system. When applied topically, they interact with macrophages—immune cells in your skin—encouraging them to adopt an anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. This shift reduces pro-inflammatory signalling, which may benefit irritated or compromised skin.

The vesicles also carry microRNAs and other biomolecules that can influence fibroblast activity (the cells responsible for collagen and elastin production) and support re-epithelialisation—the process of skin cells regenerating across a wound or damaged area.

Clinical Evidence & References

In vitro and animal model studies show promising results. Research demonstrates that Lactobacillus-derived EVs can accelerate wound healing, increase cell proliferation in fibroblasts, and shift immune responses towards anti-inflammatory patterns. Human studies are more limited; early findings suggest potential benefits for skin rejuvenation and modulation of ageing-related gene expression, though these results are preliminary.

The evidence base is growing but remains smaller than for established skincare ingredients. Most studies use laboratory or animal models rather than large-scale human trials, so claims should be viewed as exploratory rather than conclusively proven.

How to Use

LEVs are typically found in serums, essences, or treatment products. Apply to clean, dry skin before heavier creams or oils, which may form a barrier and reduce efficacy. As with any new ingredient, introduce it gradually and observe your skin's response over 2-4 weeks. LEVs can be layered with other actives, though combining multiple immune-modulating ingredients is unnecessary for most people.

Safety & Precautions

Lactobacillus-derived extracellular vesicles are generally well-tolerated and non-irritating, making them suitable for sensitive skin. Those with severe bacterial sensitivities or compromised skin barriers should patch-test first.
