What Is Hansenula … Ferment?

This ingredient is a multi-strain ferment derived from fig and lemon, combined with beneficial microorganisms including Hansenula, Kloeckera, Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus and Saccharomyces species. Fermentation is a process where microbes break down plant material, creating bioactive compounds and metabolites that differ from the original ingredients.

The resulting ferment functions as a skin conditioning and protective agent. Fermented botanical ingredients are used in skincare to provide amino acids, organic acids and other compounds that may support skin health and resilience.

How It Works

During fermentation, the microorganisms metabolise the fig and lemon substrates, producing amino acids, peptides, and organic acids. These byproducts are retained in the final ferment, which is then incorporated into skincare formulations.

Once applied to skin, these compounds work through multiple pathways: amino acids support skin structure and hydration; organic acids may gently exfoliate and support natural renewal; and antioxidant compounds help neutralise free radical damage from environmental exposure.

Clinical Evidence & References

Published research specifically on this multi-strain ferment combination is limited. However, individual fermented ingredients and their component organisms have been studied separately. Lactobacillus-based ferments show promise for supporting skin barrier function and reducing inflammation in preliminary research, though high-quality human studies remain sparse.

The evidence base is strongest for fermented ingredients as skin conditioning agents. Claims about immunity or barrier repair require further investigation in controlled human trials before they can be considered established.

How to Use

This ingredient is typically found in serums, essences and hydrating products. Apply to clean, damp skin before heavier creams or oils to allow proper absorption. It can generally be used both morning and evening as part of a regular skincare routine. If layering multiple products, apply lightest textures first.

Safety & Precautions

Generally well-tolerated. Those with sensitivity to fermented products or specific microorganism strains should patch-test first. Not a concern for most skin types.
