Laureth-21

Laureth-21 is a non-ionic surfactant derived from lauryl alcohol and ethylene oxide. It belongs to a family of ingredients called polyethers, which are widely used in cosmetic formulations to help blend oil and water-based components together.In skincare products, laureth-21 functions primarily as a solubiliser and emulsifier. Its role is to help suspend active ingredients and oils in aqueous formulations, making them easier to apply and distribute evenly across the skin. It appears in a small proportion of skincare products, typically at low concentrations.

Laureth-21 has a molecular structure with one end that attracts water and another that attracts oils. This dual affinity allows it to sit at the boundary between oil and water phases, preventing them from separating. In this way, it keeps a formulation stable and homogeneous.It also helps to incorporate hydrophobic (oil-loving) active ingredients into predominantly aqueous products, ensuring they remain evenly dispersed rather than pooling or separating out.

Laureth-21 is a background ingredient that does not require special usage instructions. Use products containing it as directed by the manufacturer. Its presence should be transparent in the ingredient list, typically appearing in the lower portion, which reflects its low concentration in the formulation.

Laureth-21 is generally well-tolerated and recognised as a safe ingredient in cosmetic formulations at typical concentrations. It is non-irritating for most people, though those with extreme sensitivity to surfactants may occasionally experience mild irritation.
