Laureth-25

Laureth-25 is a non-ionic surfactant derived from lauryl alcohol and ethylene oxide. It belongs to the polyethoxylated alcohol family commonly used in cosmetics for its dual role as a cleansing agent and emulsifier.In skincare products, Laureth-25 helps to remove oils, dirt and makeup from the skin surface whilst also helping water and oil-based ingredients blend together seamlessly in formulations. Its mild profile makes it a favoured choice in gentle cleansers and lotions designed for regular use.

Laureth-25 works through its surfactant structure: one end is water-loving (hydrophilic) and the other is oil-loving (lipophilic). This dual nature allows it to surround oil and dirt particles, suspending them so they can be rinsed away with water. The molecule's 25 units of ethylene oxide give it a particularly gentle profile compared to surfactants with fewer ethoxy groups.When used as an emulsifier, Laureth-25 sits at the boundary between oil and water phases, stabilising the mixture and preventing separation over time.

Laureth-25 is typically used in rinse-off cleansers or as part of a stable emulsion in creams and lotions, so no specific application technique is needed beyond the product instructions. If using a cleanser containing Laureth-25, apply to damp skin, massage gently and rinse thoroughly. In leave-on formulations, follow the product's guidance for frequency and amount.

Laureth-25 is widely considered safe and well-tolerated in cosmetic products. Very rarely, individuals with sensitivities to ethoxylated surfactants may experience mild irritation; patch testing is advisable for reactive skin.
