What Is Lauryl Hydroxysultaine?
Lauryl hydroxysultaine is a surfactant derived from coconut oil. It belongs to a class of mild cleaning agents called sultaines, which are designed to have lower irritancy potential compared to traditional sulphate-based surfactants.
In skincare and haircare products, it functions primarily as a cleanser and foam booster, helping to remove oils and impurities from the skin and hair. It also provides some conditioning properties and can help stabilise the thickness of formulations.
How It Works
As a surfactant, lauryl hydroxysultaine works by reducing the surface tension of water and helping to emulsify oils. This allows it to bind to both water-soluble and oil-soluble substances, making it easier to rinse away dirt, sebum and makeup from the skin.
Its mild structure — with a hydroxyl group and sulphur-based head — is believed to interact less harshly with the skin barrier compared to more aggressive anionic surfactants. It also contributes to the feel and consistency of a product through its viscosity-controlling properties.
Clinical Evidence & References
Lauryl hydroxysultaine has been assessed for safety as part of a broader review of alkyl sultaines by the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety. The Panel concluded that these ingredients are safe for use in cosmetics at current concentrations and practices.
However, specific efficacy or irritancy data comparing lauryl hydroxysultaine directly to other surfactants is limited in published literature. It is positioned as a milder alternative to sulphate-based cleansers, though individual tolerance varies depending on formulation, concentration and skin type.

How to Use
Lauryl hydroxysultaine is typically found in rinse-off products such as cleansers and shampoos rather than leave-on formulations. When using a cleanser containing this ingredient, apply a small amount to damp skin or hair, massage gently, and rinse thoroughly. It is generally suitable for daily use, though those with very sensitive skin may wish to patch test first.
