What Is Lysophosphatidylglycerol?
Lysophosphatidylglycerol is a naturally occurring lipid — a type of molecule found in cell membranes and skin barrier structures. It is derived from phospholipids, which are key structural components of healthy skin. In skincare formulations, it functions as both an emulsifier (helping blend oil and water-based ingredients) and a humectant (drawing moisture into the skin).
This ingredient works at the cellular level, interacting with skin lipids to support barrier integrity. Because it mimics compounds naturally present in skin, it can integrate into the skin's lipid matrix more readily than some synthetic alternatives.
How It Works
Lysophosphatidylglycerol integrates into the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) where it reinforces the lipid matrix — the fatty substances that cement skin cells together. This strengthened barrier reduces transepidermal water loss, helping skin retain hydration more effectively.
At a deeper level, the ingredient appears to influence cellular signalling pathways. Research indicates it may upregulate procollagen production (the precursor to collagen) whilst simultaneously suppressing matrix metalloproteinases (enzymes that break down collagen). This dual action may help preserve skin's structural integrity, particularly when exposed to UV damage.

In-vitro studies have shown that lysophosphatidylglycerol, alongside related phospholipids, can increase procollagen expression in dermal fibroblasts and inhibit UV-induced increases in collagen-degrading enzymes. These results are promising, as they suggest the ingredient may help protect skin structure from photo-aging.
However, most published evidence comes from laboratory studies rather than human trials. Whilst the mechanism is biologically plausible and in-vitro data is supportive, long-term clinical evidence of its anti-ageing efficacy in living human skin remains limited. It is best viewed as a barrier-supporting and structurally beneficial ingredient rather than a standalone anti-ageing solution.
