Magnesium Nitrate

Magnesium nitrate is an inorganic salt composed of magnesium and nitrate ions. In cosmetics, it functions as a hair conditioning agent, helping to improve the texture and manageability of hair fibres. It is relatively uncommon in skincare products, appearing in only around 0.3% of formulations.As a mineral-derived ingredient, magnesium nitrate works by interacting with the hair shaft to enhance its appearance and feel. Its primary application is within hair care rather than direct skin benefits, though it may be encountered in some multi-purpose or combination formulations.

Magnesium nitrate conditions hair by coating or interacting with the hair shaft, which can reduce friction between fibres and improve their alignment. This mechanism helps hair appear smoother and feel softer to the touch.As an inorganic salt, it does not penetrate deeply into the skin or hair cortex, but rather works at the surface level to enhance sensory properties and ease of handling.

Magnesium nitrate is primarily formulated by manufacturers into finished products rather than used as a standalone ingredient. If using a product containing this ingredient, apply according to the manufacturer's instructions. For hair products, even distribution through wet hair before rinsing will help optimise conditioning effects.

Magnesium nitrate is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations at typical concentrations. As with any ingredient, discontinue use if irritation develops and perform a patch test if you have known sensitivities to minerals or inorganic salts.
