What Is Morus Alba Stem Extract?
Morus alba stem extract is derived from the twigs of the mulberry tree, a plant with a long history of use in traditional medicine. The extract is prepared through hydroalcoholic processing and contains a complex mixture of naturally occurring compounds, including flavones and chalcones. These are bioactive molecules known for their antioxidant properties.
In skincare formulations, this ingredient is used as a skin conditioning agent. The extract's primary mechanism centres on its antioxidant capacity and potential to inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production.
How It Works
The extract exerts its effects through two main pathways. First, its constituent compounds (including oxyresveratrol and morachalcone A) act as antioxidants by neutralising free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental stressors. This helps reduce oxidative damage to skin cells.
Second, several of these same compounds inhibit tyrosinase activity in laboratory studies—sometimes more effectively than the established tyrosinase inhibitor kojic acid. By slowing melanin synthesis, the extract may help address hyperpigmentation concerns, though translating in-vitro findings to in-vivo skin results requires further investigation.

However, most existing evidence is derived from in-vitro (test-tube) studies on isolated compounds rather than clinical trials on human skin. While these findings are encouraging, direct evidence of efficacy in finished skincare products applied to the skin remains limited. Further human studies would help clarify real-world benefits and optimal formulation approaches.
