What Is Myristic Acid?
Myristic acid is a saturated fatty acid with 14 carbon atoms in its chain. It occurs naturally in many plant and animal fats, including nutmeg, coconut oil, and palm oil, making it a common component of foods and cosmetics. In skincare formulations, it typically functions as a cleanser, emulsifier, or fragrance component.
As a fatty acid, myristic acid has a hydrophobic (water-repelling) character, which allows it to interact with oils and help lift impurities from the skin surface. It also helps stabilise formulations by allowing oil and water phases to mix effectively.
How It Works
As a fatty acid, myristic acid works primarily through its structure: one end attracts oils and the other attracts water. This dual affinity makes it an effective emulsifier, allowing formulas to maintain a stable texture and for cleansing agents to suspend oil-soluble debris so it can be rinsed away.
Laboratory studies indicate myristic acid may also have anti-inflammatory properties, potentially through mechanisms involving immune cell signalling. However, most of this evidence comes from laboratory models rather than direct human skin studies, so the real-world benefit in skincare products remains unclear.

In vitro (laboratory) research suggests myristic acid can reduce inflammation markers and may have pain-reducing properties in animal models. One study observed good anti-inflammatory effects in a mouse model of acute and chronic skin irritation.
However, human clinical data on myristic acid's effects in skincare formulations are limited. The ingredient has a long history of safe use in food and cosmetics, with low toxicity in safety assessments, but this does not directly demonstrate efficacy for specific skin concerns in real-world use.
How to Use
Myristic acid is typically incorporated by manufacturers into cleansing products and emulsions rather than used as a standalone ingredient by consumers. If using a product containing it, follow the product instructions. As with any cleanser or emulsion, patch test if you have sensitive or reactive skin, particularly if you are prone to fungal acne, as some individuals find saturated fatty acids can trigger breakouts.
