Myristyl Lactate

Myristyl lactate is a synthetic ester formed from myristic acid (a naturally occurring fatty acid) and lactic acid. It functions primarily as an emollient and skin conditioning agent, helping to soften and smooth the skin surface.This ingredient appears in relatively few skincare formulations (roughly 0.1% of products), where it is typically used at low concentrations to enhance texture and improve how products feel on the skin.

Myristyl lactate works primarily as an emollient, reducing water loss from the skin and creating a smooth, conditioned feel. At higher concentrations (above 3%), research suggests it may also enhance the percutaneous absorption of other ingredients by acting on the stratum corneum, the skin's outermost layer.In most skincare products, however, concentrations are likely too low for this absorption-enhancing effect to be significant. Its primary role remains skin conditioning and texture improvement.

Myristyl lactate is used by formulators rather than applied directly by consumers. When present in your skincare, it will be listed in the ingredients. There are no specific usage instructions required; simply apply the product as directed.

Myristyl lactate is generally well-tolerated. However, some users report it may contribute to congestion or worsen oily skin, though evidence for this is anecdotal rather than conclusive. Patch testing is advisable if you have acne-prone or very oily skin.
