Octoxynol-9 is a synthetic surfactant derived from ethoxylated alkylphenols. It is produced through a chemical reaction involving phenol, ethylene oxide, and sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure. The resulting molecule has a structure that allows it to interact with both water-soluble and oil-soluble components.
In skincare formulations, octoxynol-9 functions as an emulsifying and solubilising agent. It works to blend incompatible ingredients, stabilise product texture, and help distribute active compounds evenly throughout a formula. It is typically used at low concentrations, usually below 5%.
How It Works
Octoxynol-9 is a type of surfactant, meaning it has a molecular structure with both water-loving and oil-loving regions. This dual nature allows it to sit at the boundary between oil and water phases in a formulation, reducing surface tension and enabling them to mix smoothly rather than separate.
When applied to skin, it also helps other ingredients penetrate evenly and remain in contact with the skin surface. This improves the consistency of product performance across different areas of the face or body.
Clinical Evidence & References
Octoxynol-9 has been evaluated for safety in both animal and human-based studies. Developmental toxicity studies in rats showed no adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes or fetal development when dosed orally or applied to skin, even at substantially higher concentrations than would be used in cosmetics.
Research into skin irritation potential using three-dimensional human skin models is ongoing. Current evidence suggests octoxynol-9 is generally well-tolerated at the low concentrations used in skincare formulations, though individual sensitivity can vary. The ingredient has a long history of use in cosmetics and personal care products without significant safety concerns at typical use levels.

How to Use
Octoxynol-9 is a functional ingredient within formulations rather than an active you apply directly. Simply use products containing it as directed. There is no need to adjust frequency or quantity based on this ingredient alone. If you have very sensitive or reactive skin, patch test new products first, as sensitivity is typically related to other formula components rather than the octoxynol-9 itself.
