What Is Omental Lipids?
Omental lipids are fatty compounds extracted from the omentum, a fold of tissue within the abdominal cavity. This tissue is naturally rich in neutral glycerides, phospholipids, glycolipids and gangliosides — all lipid types found in healthy skin. When purified and incorporated into skincare formulations, omental lipids function as an emollient, helping to soften and coat the skin surface.
The omentum itself is highly vascularised and plays a protective and reparative role in the body. Whether these biological properties translate meaningfully to topical application remains an area of ongoing investigation.
How It Works
Omental lipids work primarily as an emollient by forming a protective layer on the skin surface, reducing transepidermal water loss and helping skin retain moisture. The specific lipid composition — including phospholipids and glycolipids — may also integrate with the skin's natural lipid matrix, supporting barrier integrity.
Because the omentum is a tissue with inherent reparative properties, there is theoretical interest in whether topical omental lipids might support skin healing. However, the degree to which these properties persist in purified, topical formulations requires further research.
Clinical Evidence & References
Published evidence suggests that topical omental lipid formulations are useful for softening, moisturising and smoothing skin. Some research indicates potential benefits in preventing skin ulcers, though this evidence comes primarily from narrative review rather than large-scale clinical trials.
The ingredient remains relatively understudied in dermatological literature, and most claims centre on its emollient properties and lipid composition rather than unique biological effects. Further clinical investigation would help clarify its benefits beyond standard moisturisation.
How to Use
Omental lipids are typically found in creams and balms designed for dry or compromised skin. Apply to clean skin as part of your regular moisturising routine. Because it functions as an occlusive emollient, it pairs well with hydrating ingredients applied beforehand.
