What Is Pantethine?
Pantethine is the oxidised dimer form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). It functions as a precursor to coenzyme A, a molecule essential for numerous metabolic processes in cells. In skincare, it is classified as an emollient and conditioning agent, though its primary interest lies in its biochemical activity rather than surface-level moisturising properties.
The ingredient is relatively uncommon in skincare formulations, appearing in fewer than 0.1% of products. Its use reflects growing interest in supporting cellular metabolism and resilience rather than delivering immediate hydration or occlusion.
How It Works
Pantethine is metabolised within skin cells to form cysteamine, which then participates in the formation of coenzyme A. This coenzyme is a cofactor for multiple enzymatic reactions involved in energy production, fatty acid synthesis, and cellular repair processes.
Research indicates that pantethine may also reduce the shedding of microparticles from stressed cells and help manage oxidative stress responses. However, most evidence comes from cell culture and animal studies; translation to human skin in cosmetic use remains limited.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro and in vivo studies suggest pantethine can inhibit cholesterol synthesis in skin fibroblasts and reduce microparticle shedding from endothelial cells under inflammatory stress. Animal models show promise for managing systemic inflammatory responses.
However, clinical data on pantethine's efficacy in cosmetic skincare formulations is sparse. Most research has examined oral or systemic use, or employed concentrations higher than those typically found in topical products. Evidence for topical application in cosmetic settings remains limited, and further human studies are needed to establish practical benefit at concentrations used in skincare.

How to Use
Pantethine is best incorporated into leave-on products such as serums, moisturisers, or treatment essences where it can remain in contact with skin. Given its biochemical rather than purely hydrating function, it works well as part of a layered routine and is compatible with most other active ingredients. No specific usage restrictions apply, though consistency over time is likely necessary to observe any potential cellular-level benefits.
