What Is Panthenol?
Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5, and is usually described as provitamin B5 because the skin converts it into the vitamin itself once it is absorbed. It is one of the most widely used supporting ingredients in skincare and haircare, and one of the least likely to cause anyone any trouble.
On an ingredients list it appears as Panthenol, D-Panthenol, Dexpanthenol or occasionally Provitamin B5. There are two mirror-image forms, D and L, and only the D form is biologically useful. Products stating D-Panthenol or Dexpanthenol are being specific about this; a label saying simply panthenol may be either the D form or a mixture.
It is used at roughly 1% to 5% in most skincare, with higher levels in repair balms and post-procedure products. It is water-soluble, has a slightly syrupy feel at higher concentrations, and holds water well, which is why it turns up in everything from light essences to thick barrier ointments.
You will meet it most often in products aimed at skin that is dry, tight, reddened or recovering: soothing serums, barrier creams, aftersun, post-treatment balms and gentle cleansers. It also appears very widely as a supporting ingredient in products built around stronger actives, where its job is to make the whole formula more comfortable.
It is well tolerated to an unusual degree, with reactions being rare, which is why it appears so often in products for sensitive and compromised skin.

How It Works
Panthenol does two quite different things, and both are useful.
The first is straightforward hydration. It is a humectant, meaning it binds water and holds it within the upper layers of the skin. Unlike hyaluronic acid, which is a large molecule that sits mainly at the surface, panthenol is small enough to move a little further in, so the hydrating effect feels less superficial and less dependent on being sealed immediately. Skin holding more water looks plumper and feels softer, and the flaking and tightness that come with dryness ease.
The second is its role in the skin’s own repair processes. Once absorbed, panthenol is converted into pantothenic acid, which the body requires in order to make coenzyme A, a molecule central to how cells produce energy and how they build lipids. Supplying the precursor supports the production of the fatty materials that make up the skin barrier, which is why panthenol is associated with barrier recovery rather than just surface comfort. This is also why it appears so consistently in products for skin that has been over-exfoliated, wind-burned, sunburned or otherwise disrupted.
Alongside this it has a genuine calming effect on the look of redness and irritation. The mechanism is not fully mapped, but the effect is consistent enough that panthenol is a standard inclusion in formulations intended to soothe. None of this involves stimulating turnover or exfoliating anything, so there is no adjustment period and no reason to build up slowly.

Panthenol has an extensive body of clinical evidence supporting its use as a topical humectant and skin-repair agent. The ingredient's mechanism is well-established: it penetrates the stratum corneum, converts to pantothenic acid, and enhances moisture binding whilst strengthening the skin barrier. Published research consistently demonstrates efficacy in reducing transepidermal water loss and promoting wound healing, with particular benefit in managing irritated, damaged, or compromised skin.
The ingredient is exceptionally well-tolerated across all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin, with few documented adverse effects. However, most clinical studies involve relatively small participant numbers and short duration. Individual response to panthenol can vary, and results typically develop gradually rather than immediately, which reflects its supportive role in skin repair rather than acute intervention.

How to Use
Panthenol is about as low-maintenance as skincare ingredients get, and it is most valuable as a supporting player.
- When: morning and night, as often as you like. No tolerance to build, no breaks needed, no sun sensitivity.
- Order in the routine: it is water-soluble, so it belongs in the earlier, thinner layers, after cleansing and before moisturiser. In a cream or balm, it goes wherever that product goes.
- Seal it in. As with any humectant, following it with a moisturiser gets considerably more out of it, particularly in dry or heated environments.
- Use it as a recovery ingredient. If skin is stinging, tight or flaking after over-exfoliating or too much retinoid, a simple panthenol serum or balm twice daily is one of the more reliable ways back.
- Pairs well with: everything, and particularly with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and squalane. It is a standard companion to retinoids and exfoliating acids.
- Look at the position on the label. Panthenol high in the ingredients list is doing real work; a trace at the very end is largely decorative.
- On the body and lips too. It is equally useful in hand creams, lip balms and aftersun.
Comfort and hydration improve quickly, often within days. The barrier support is slower and shows up as skin that stays comfortable rather than as a dramatic change.
