What Is Papain Beta-Glucan?
Papain beta-glucan combines two naturally derived ingredients: papain, a proteolytic enzyme from papaya fruit, and beta-glucan, a polysaccharide found in yeast cell walls and grains. Together, they function as a skin and hair conditioning agent in cosmetic formulations.
Papain works by gently breaking down surface proteins, whilst beta-glucan is known for its film-forming and moisturising properties. This combination is designed to improve skin texture and hydration simultaneously.
How It Works
Papain is a protease enzyme that selectively breaks down damaged or dead skin proteins on the surface, promoting gentle desquamation without the harshness of physical scrubbing. This enzymatic action can help improve skin clarity and texture renewal.
Beta-glucan, meanwhile, forms a breathable matrix on the skin's surface that attracts and holds water molecules. It also has immunomodulatory properties that may help support skin barrier resilience and reduce transepidermal water loss.
Clinical Evidence & References
The individual components have some supporting research. Beta-glucan is well documented for its hydrating and barrier-supporting effects in skincare; several studies suggest it can improve skin moisture content and reduce visible dryness. Papain has a longer history of use in enzymatic exfoliants and shows promise for gentle protein digestion on skin.
However, direct evidence on the combined papain beta-glucan complex in cosmetic formulations remains limited. Most support comes from the ingredient components' individual track records rather than clinical trials of this specific blend.
How to Use
Papain beta-glucan is typically found in cleansers, exfoliating masks, and conditioning treatments. It can be used daily in milder formulations, or 2-3 times weekly in more concentrated exfoliating products. Pair with a hydrating moisturiser to maximise the conditioning benefits, especially if using as an active exfoliant.
