PEG-3 Dimethicone

PEG-3 Dimethicone is a silicone-based conditioning ingredient created by combining dimethicone (a lightweight silicone polymer) with polyethylene glycol (PEG). This chemical modification makes it water-dispersible, allowing it to blend more easily into formulations and rinse away more readily than pure silicones.In skincare and haircare products, it functions as a humectant and occlusive, forming a thin, non-greasy film on the skin's surface. This barrier helps reduce transepidermal water loss whilst imparting a smooth, polished feel.

PEG-3 Dimethicone works by depositing a microscopically thin, flexible layer on the skin's surface. This layer is permeable enough to allow skin respiration whilst reducing water evaporation, effectively trapping moisture within the stratum corneum.The PEG component makes this silicone water-compatible, meaning it can be easily incorporated into water-based formulations and rinsed off with water rather than requiring an oil-based cleanser. The result is a conditioning effect without the occlusive heaviness sometimes associated with pure silicone oils.

PEG-3 Dimethicone is typically used as part of a complete formulation rather than as a standalone active. It works well in serums, moisturisers, and primers designed to smooth and hydrate. Apply to clean skin, either alone or layered under other products. A little goes a long way; use sparingly to avoid a heavy or sticky feel. It pairs well with hydrating ingredients such as humectants and emollients.

PEG-3 Dimethicone is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use in cosmetics across most skin types. It is non-comedogenic and rarely irritating; however, those with silicone sensitivities or very sensitive skin should patch-test first.
