What Is PEG-8 Laurate?
PEG-8 Laurate is a polyethylene glycol (PEG) derived surfactant and emulsifying agent commonly used in skincare formulations. It functions primarily to stabilise oil and water-based ingredients, allowing them to blend smoothly into a uniform product texture.
Beyond its emulsifying role, emerging research suggests PEG-8 Laurate may interact with the skin's microbiome in ways that could support natural bacterial balance, particularly in relation to acne management.
How It Works
As a surfactant, PEG-8 Laurate reduces surface tension between oil and water molecules, allowing them to mix evenly. This stabilises formulations and ensures consistent product performance across shelf life.
At the microbiome level, preliminary research indicates PEG-8 Laurate may selectively support the growth of beneficial skin bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis. These bacteria can, in turn, produce compounds that inhibit the growth of Cutibacterium acnes—a bacterium involved in acne formation. The mechanism appears to involve fermentation processes that generate antimicrobial activity on the skin.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory and animal studies show promising signals: PEG-8 Laurate appears to enhance the anti-acne activity of beneficial skin bacteria and may reduce the growth of acne-causing bacteria. In mouse models, this effect was observed both in vitro and when bacteria were introduced intradermally.
However, human clinical trials remain limited. The evidence is primarily derived from controlled laboratory settings and animal studies, so translating these findings to real-world skincare results requires further investigation. More rigorous human studies would help clarify whether these microbiome effects occur reliably in living skin.
How to Use
PEG-8 Laurate is typically used as a formulation ingredient at low concentrations (often well under 1%), so there are no specific application instructions for consumers. It works behind the scenes to stabilise and homogenise your skincare product. Use the product as directed by the manufacturer.
