What Is Phytosphingosine Phosphate?
Phytosphingosine phosphate (PhS1P) is a naturally occurring lipid compound found in plants and fungi. It is structurally similar to signalling molecules that occur in human skin, which allows it to interact with cellular pathways involved in skin health and repair.
In skincare formulations, phytosphingosine phosphate functions as a skin and hair conditioning agent. It is thought to work by mimicking natural biological signals that support skin cell behaviour and the maintenance of skin structure.
How It Works
Phytosphingosine phosphate is recognised by receptors on dermal fibroblasts—the cells that produce collagen and other structural proteins. When activated, these receptors trigger intracellular pathways that influence cell survival, migration, and protein synthesis.
Research suggests that PhS1P may also help protect fibroblasts from oxidative damage by modulating stress-response pathways. This cellular protection may be particularly relevant in ageing skin, where oxidative stress contributes to visible changes in firmness and texture.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro studies show that phytosphingosine phosphate promotes fibroblast activity and may work synergistically with growth factors to support extracellular matrix production. Cell studies also indicate that PhS1P can help attenuate the harmful effects of oxidative stress on skin cells.
Clinical data in humans remains limited. Whilst preliminary research in women over 35 with visible signs of skin ageing suggests benefits to skin hydration, more robust clinical evidence is needed to establish efficacy in broader populations and to quantify the magnitude of effect.

How to Use
Phytosphingosine phosphate is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and leave-on treatments where it can remain in contact with the skin. It is generally compatible with other skincare ingredients and can be used alongside vitamin C, niacinamide, and peptides. Follow the usage instructions on your product's label for best results.
