What Is Placental Enzymes?
Placental enzymes are proteolytic enzymes derived from placental tissue. They function as natural exfoliants and conditioning agents in skincare formulations, working to break down and remove dead skin cells from the surface layer of the skin.
These enzymes are typically included in products designed to improve skin texture and clarity. Unlike mechanical exfoliants, enzyme-based products work through biochemical action, making them gentler and more selective in their removal of damaged or dead skin cells.
How It Works
Placental enzymes are proteases—they break peptide bonds in proteins. When applied to skin, they selectively break down the protein structures that hold dead skin cells together on the surface, allowing these cells to slough away more easily than with manual removal.
This enzymatic action is gentler than physical scrubbing because it targets specific proteins rather than applying blunt mechanical force. The conditioning aspect comes from the amino acids and other compounds naturally present in the placental extract, which can help soften and hydrate the skin during exfoliation.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research on placental tissue shows it contains various bioactive compounds, including enzymes and amino acids. However, clinical evidence specifically evaluating placental enzymes as skincare ingredients remains limited in the published literature. Most evidence is drawn from traditional use and product formulation data rather than controlled human studies.
Proteolytic enzymes in general are recognised as safe and effective exfoliants when used appropriately. Given the specific origin of placental enzymes, individual product formulations vary, so efficacy may depend on enzyme concentration, formulation pH, and other co-ingredients rather than the placental source alone.
How to Use
Enzyme products work best on clean, dry skin and are typically left on for 5–15 minutes before gentle removal with a warm, damp cloth. Most enzyme exfoliants are designed for once or twice weekly use; overuse can cause irritation. Always follow the specific product instructions, as formulations vary. Avoid using enzyme products on very inflamed, broken, or sunburned skin.
