What Is Placental Lipids?

Placental lipids are fat-soluble compounds extracted from placental tissue. They contain a mixture of naturally occurring lipids—including cholesterol, fatty acids, and other membrane components—that mirror some of the structural elements found in healthy skin.

In skincare formulations, placental lipids function primarily as emollients, helping to soften and smooth the skin surface by filling gaps between skin cells and reducing transepidermal water loss.

How It Works

Placental lipids work through their emollient action. When applied to skin, they integrate into the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer) and sit between skin cells, creating a hydrophobic barrier that slows water loss. This mechanism is straightforward physics rather than a targeted biochemical reaction—the lipids physically occupy space and impede evaporation.

Because the lipid profile somewhat resembles components naturally present in skin, they may integrate reasonably well with existing skin lipids, though the extent to which they actively strengthen the barrier versus simply providing a temporary protective layer remains incompletely characterised.

Clinical Evidence & References

Placental lipids have been assessed for safety by regulatory bodies and are considered acceptable cosmetic ingredients. However, specific efficacy studies comparing placental lipids to other emollients (such as plant-derived oils or synthetic esters) are limited in the published literature.

The research suggests placental lipids function as emollients in line with their chemical composition, but claims about unique skin-repairing or rejuvenating properties beyond basic hydration and barrier support are not well-supported by robust clinical data.

How to Use

Placental lipids are typically found in moisturisers, serums, and creams rather than as standalone products. Use as directed on the product label—usually daily as part of your moisturising step. Apply to clean, damp skin to enhance hydration; they work well layered over hydrating toners or essences.

Safety & Precautions

Placental lipids are generally well-tolerated and considered safe for cosmetic use. Those with specific ethical or religious concerns about placental-derived ingredients may prefer alternatives.
