Polyglyceryl-3 polydimethylsiloxyethyl dimethicone is a hybrid silicone compound derived from dimethicone, a widely used polymer in skincare and cosmetic formulations. It combines silicone chemistry with polyglyceryl (sugar-derived) components to create an ingredient that conditions both skin and hair fibres.In formulations, it functions primarily as a skin and hair conditioning agent, working to coat and smooth the surface of skin cells and hair strands. It is used in relatively small concentrations and appears in approximately 0.5% of skincare products currently on the market.

This ingredient works by depositing a thin, lightweight film on the skin's surface. The silicone backbone provides slip and conditioning properties, whilst the polyglyceryl component helps it bind to skin in a way that feels natural rather than heavy or occlusive.Unlike heavier occlusive oils, its hybrid structure allows it to condition whilst maintaining skin permeability, making it suitable for a range of formulations where both hydration and comfort are priorities.

This ingredient is typically incorporated into serums, moisturisers, and light oils by manufacturers, so you do not need to adjust how you use products containing it. Simply apply as directed on the product label. It works well in layering routines and does not typically interact negatively with other skincare actives.
