Polyquaternium-4 is a synthetic polymer—a long-chain molecule built from smaller chemical units. It belongs to a class of ingredients called quaternary ammonium compounds, which carry a positive electrical charge. This charge allows the ingredient to bind to hair fibres, which are naturally negatively charged.
In skincare and haircare formulations, Polyquaternium-4 functions primarily as a film-former and antistatic agent. It deposits a thin, protective layer on the skin or hair surface, helping to reduce friction and static electricity while imparting a smoother feel.
How It Works
Polyquaternium-4 works through electrostatic attraction. Its positive charge is attracted to the negatively charged outer layer of skin cells, allowing it to adhere and form a thin, uniform coating. This layer sits on the surface rather than penetrating deeper into the skin.
The polymer's film-forming properties mean it doesn't wash away immediately with water, though it will gradually diminish with cleansing and time. This coating can temporarily smooth micro-irregularities on the skin surface and reduce the tendency for static buildup.
